| Sort of like barbeque but sort of like curry, sort of savory, sort of sweet, this Jerk Tofu is sort of very, very satisfying. Serve it with a huge pile of garlicky greens and a baked sweet potato or Ginger Roasted Winter vegetables. Remember to give yourself time for the pressing and marinade time, which equals 2 hours. |
 |
Equipment:
A blender or food processor
Skillet (cast iron is preferred)
Ingredients
1 lb Extra Firm tofu, pressed for at least an hour*
For the marinade:
1/2 large white onion, roughly choppped
4 cloves garlic
2 tablespoons fresh ginger, grated
juice of 2 limes
zest of 1 lime
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon dried thyme
2 teaspoons allspice
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 jalapeno peppers, seeded and chopped (or one if you don't want it too spicy)
Directions
Puree all ingredients for the marinade.
Slice the pressed tofu into long triangles like this:
Slice into eigths width-wise
Slice each eigth in half into a long triangle
Marinade tofu in a bowl for an hour covered adjusting slices once.
Prepare the skillet with a thin coat of olive oil and turn heat to medium high. When pan is hot, lay tofu in a sigle layer. Cook for 8 minutes on each side.
Serve!
*To press tofu, wrap in paper towels or a clean dish towel and press under the weight of a heavy object, such as a skillet with a heavy book in it. Turn over after 1/2 hour. This will get the water out and allow the tofu to soak up more of the marinade. |

this is an excellent recipe. everyone that ate it loved it. i left the seeds of the jalepe?os in, made it nice an' hot... complimented the spiciness of the lime and spices well. |

Hot damn, this was good. I made mine with tempeh instead to simulate my favorite vegan joint's recipe. I like the texture a lot. Next I need to try it with tofu. |

This recipe is amazingly delicioius. I took the time to marinate overnight and then made soy pepperjack melts. Quite possibly the tastiest sandwhich I have ever eaten... This one is not to be missed. Vegan wheat bread, sprouts, jerk tofu and soy pepperjack, throw a little of the extra marinade on there and you have a toasty snack. |

This was incredibly delicious! I made it with frozen, defrosted and pressed tofu which had a cool texture. After cooking the tofu I mixed some water into the remaining marinade and "deglazed" the pan with it and poured that on top. I just finished eating and I already can't wait to have this again. |

This recipe rules! I used tempeh and marinated on skewers with bell peppers and mushrooms and grilled em...I'm in culinary school and my meat-eating classmates made fun of me at first, but they practially licked the plate clean! HAH! |
