Cinnamon Apple Crisp
Submitted by Isa
prep time: 15 minutes | cooking time: 1 hour | makes 8 -12 servings
A perfect, basic apple crisp recipe. Add raisins or cranberries if you like. I use Granny Smith apples but you can use whatever kind you've got.
Equipment:
Two Mixing Bowls, 9 x 13 Baking Dish (glass is best), Aluminum Foil

Ingredients
Filling ingredients:
4 pounds (about 8) apples, peeled, cored, quartered and cut in 1/4 inch slices
juice of 1/2 a lemon
1 tablespoon arrowroot powder (corn or potato starch would be an ok substitution)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon allspice
tiny pinch cloves (about 1/16 teaspoon)
1/2 cup pure maple syrup

Topping Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/3 cup all purpouse flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons canola oil
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
1 teaspoons vanilla

Directions
Preaheat oven to 350. In a large bowl squeeze lemon juice over sliced apples. Add the arrow root and spices making sure all apples are coated. Move apple mixture to the baking dish and drizzle the maple syrup over it. Cover with tin foil and bake for 35 minutes.

Meanwhile prepare the topping. Sift dry ingredients together, and in a seperate bowl, mix wet ingredients well. Fold wet into dry mixing with a fork as you go along, until well coated and crumbly.

When apples are done baking, remove from oven and toss, then flatten them evenly with the back of a spatula or wooden spoon. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture and bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes, until top feels crispy. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Yummy. This is great even cold the next day. It may even be better because the flavors have had a chance to blend.

First time making apple crisp this guy got it just right, and this recipe makes one of the best I've tasted.

Sorry, I meant to give previous review the highest mark -- I thought it was a five, not a point five.

I made a few changes to the recipe since I don't have a glass baking pan that's 9x13. I used two glass pyrex pie dishes, about 6 large red/gold apples. I zested a lemon and put that in there as well, it made the end product really nice and fresh tasting! I doubled the spice and arrowroot measurements and tossed it all together and put 1/2c maple syrup over each mixture in their pie dishes. I had to bake mine for longer and had to dust a little flour in after 35m because the apples were still really crispy and there was a lot of thin sauce. I doubled the crisp topping and it was the perfect amount for the two pie plates. The end result was wonderful, it turned into caramel almost and it wasn't too sweet at all. Awesome!

the apples were really tasty, but i don't get the topping....well it wasn't very crispy....my oats just stayed soft and unbaked....i was thinking maybe it would've been better with a bit of vegan margarine mixed into the topping somewhere...did anyone have advice on how to get a crispier topping?

This recipe looks delicious! But... It's definitely NOT "no refined sugar" as listed. Maple syrup, arrowroot powder and potato/corn starch are pure refined carbs... Just as bad for diabetics as cane sugar. You might want to go through the "dietary considerations" page again.

I made this without the lemon, starch, nutmeg, allspice, cloves, and vanilla, and probably used more apples than necessary, yet it still tasted great.
