Chômeur Pudding

| I adapted this traditional dessert from Quebec, Canada. I love it because it's so simple and inexpensive to make. And the syrup at the bottom of the dish almost takes like maple syrup. |

Equipment:
Mixing bowl
Large glass baking dish
Ingredients
For the cake:
-2 cups flour
-¾ cup sugar
-1 cup soymilk
-4 tablespoons melted vegetable shortening or non-hydrogenated vegan
margerine
-½ teaspoon salt
-4 teaspoons baking powder
For the syrup:
-2 cups brown sugar or Sucanat
-2 cups water
-1 teaspoon flour
Directions
For the syrup: Mix dry ingredients first in a large glass baking dish and then mix in the water.
For the cake: Mix dry ingredients first in a mixing bowl. Then, add the soymilk and melted vegetable shortening, mixing gently. Divide the dough into even 6 portions and put them in the syrup already prepared in a large glass baking dish. Bake at 375 F for 30-40 minutes.

Yummm!! My bf's Qu?b?cois and his grandma used to make Chaumeur pudding. Thanks for a vegan alternative to it! |

I haven't made this, just rating the authenticity of the recipe, which is exactly the same as the one from my 1954 "La cuisine raisonnée" book (THE traditional Quebec cuisine Bible, together with Jehanne Benoit's Encyclopédie de la cuisine canadienne), of course with the exception of the vegan adjustments (limited to the milk and fat). Since many of the measurements show as "?" on my screen, I'm writing the ones I found in my book. CAKE: 2 cups flour, 3/4 cup sugar, 1 cup (soy)milk, 4 tsp baking powder, 4 tbsp shortening (my book says to melt it... I guess you should use plain oil, much healthier!!), 1/2 tsp salt. SYRUP: 2 cups brown sugar, 2 cups water, 1 tbsp flour, maple extract (no amount given). I also wanted to specify that we spell it "chômeur" (don't forget the o with the little hat!), which means "unemployed". I guess it was called that way 'cause it used to be a very inexpensive dessert. |

You're right Anne, it's spelled with an "ô". I copied the recipe from an old lady that was a friend of the family, and I didn't stop to think about grammar. I'm so embarrassed right now. Although the verb "chaumer" does exist. Maybe it referred to farmers? ;-) Anywho, all I see is ?? in the recipe too, even my name lacks two letters. Isa, what's going on? |

Hey, I admit I haven't tried this recipe but it sounds delicious =)
To those of you who see ? as measurements, it can be fixed by switching browsers or having the administrator or editor do the following below.
Editor and administrator could you please change each 3/4 and 1/2 sign to ¾ and ½ respectively?
Until then, its 3/4 cup of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon salt. |
