Orange Maple Barbeque Sauce
Submitted by Isa
prep time: 10 minutes | cooking time: 45 minutes | makes 5 cups
I wanted to add a little Asian flair to my barbeque sauce so I went for some Anise and mirin. Orange zest and juice adds just the right amount of zesty flavor. Serve this with seitan or tempeh or tofu and sauteed red peppers. It's also awesome as a grilling sauce. Don't take too long chopping the veggie, they will be thrown in the blender at the end.
Equipment:
Blender
Large skillet (cast iron is preferred)

Ingredients
2 tablespoons canola oil (any veg oil will do)
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
2 tables ginger, chopped
3 tables mirin (red wine would make an OK substitution)
15 oz can stewed tomatoes
6 oz tomato paste
zest of 1/2 an orange
juice of an orange
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon anise seed, crushed
1/4 teaspoon allspice
fresh black pepper
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional)
3 tablespoons pure maple syrup

Directions
Over medium-high heat saute onions in oil 5 minutes, until translucent. Add garlic, ginger, anise, black pepper, saute 5 more minutes. Add mirin to deglaze the pan. Add stewed tomatoes, orange juice, soy sauce, water and allspice and bring to a low boil, uncovered. You may need to lower the heat a bit. Let boil about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat and let cool just enough so that you can put it in the blender. It takes about 15 minutes for it to cool down enough, so that it's not steaming like crazy.

Add maple syrup and liquid smoke and puree. Serve over tofu, tempeh, seitan or whatever you want.

Very good recipe, although Liquid Smoke is essential not optional!

this recipe is hellalicious. Although next time I will try it without the liqued smoke, it seemed alittle overpowering and seemed to sharply contrast the taste of the orange and mapple, not in a good way. Thats just my .02 though.

try this recipe, you won't be disapointed!
