Hi! I'm looking for egg free icing, I mean the type that you use to glue gingerbreadhouses together. It's usually made with beaten eggwhite and icing sugar, creating a pipeable, soft, superstrong cement like icing that will glue just about anything, and you use it to attach sweets to the roof of the gingerbread house. I'm not sure what the official name for it is.

I know I can replace eggs with linseed / flaxseed and water for some recipes, but i wonder, would that mixture create the cement like effect I'm looking for? Also, I can't get ground flaxseed where I live, so I've been grinding up linseeds, but haven't been able to get them very fine, so i do get 'bits' in the flour, so it wouldn't look great for icing.

Any tips on creating this glue like icing without eggs? or artificial egg replacing powder, which is way too expensive for what it is...

I haven't used this recipe, but it was in the last vegetarian times.

4 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 Tbs cornstarch
1/2 tsp xanthan gum
1 pinch salt

Combine all ingredients in bowl of electric mixer fitted with whisk attachments. Beat at low speed 1 minute, or until thoroughly combined. With mixer running, drizzle 1/3 cup water water slowly down side of bowl so it doesn't splatter, slowly increasing mixer speed until sugar is incorporated. Beat at med-high speed 2 minutes, scraping down sides of bowl as needed.

Whenever I make gingerbread houses, I use this recipe.

Royal icing.

Here is a gingerbread house blog post from Vegan Dad that has a recipe for vegan royal icing.

I've found several recipes for vegan royal icing, but haven't tried any yet. Does anybody have any suggestions or used one that works?

Somebody recently asked about this. Not sure why they didn't title it Royal Icing so it's easily searchable, though.

I've always glued gingerbread houses together with melted sugar. The icing is just for decoration...

Thanks, I have no idea why I couldn't search it. I think I'm going to use the GoodBaker recipe referenced on VeganDad. I want that shiitake to be hard as a rock and I think the powdered soymilk should do the trick. Thanks!

That's an excellent idea! I bet that holds like super glue. If I ever make another ginger bread house melted sugar will be my adhesive!

I feel like I'm constantly linking to this, but here it is anyway: http://www.myvegancookbook.com/blog/201 ... ad-houses/

It's an ebook (free) about vegan gingerbread houses, with recipes and patterns. The icing recipe in it also contains xanthan gum so I'm guessing the V-times one bap posted would work well too.

Melted sugar holds gingerbread houses together like cement. I did a test run for the Chicago PPK Potluck Gingerbread House Party a few weeks ago, and while my gingerbread house texture was meh, the glue was fantastic.

This is the first time I've seen you link to this PB, so thanks for doing it again! What a wonderful resource!

Yes! Thanks PB - I am hosting a gingerbread party this weekend and this will be my first gingerbread since going vegan and I was super worried about how things would turn out - but that tutorial is perfect!
