Vegan Bake Sales For Haiti
As you must know by now, Haiti was struck with a devastating earthquake that has killed tens of thousands of people and caused who only knows how much destruction. It was already a sucky time for Haitians and this is just heartbreaking.
I don’t know about you, but I can’t get over there to volunteer and I don’t like the feeling of being utterly useless and hopeless. This afternoon I put out a call for bake sale volunteers on twitter and facebook and I got a really great response. I’m hoping that we can not only raise money, raise awareness but also remind ourselves of what really matters. Cupcakes! Wait, no…community!
I’m writing this note to have a central place to exchange info and help organize in our areas. Let’s show our support for the people of Haiti and harm no animals in the process.
If you are planning a bake sale, please get in touch here or email me: postpunkkitchen@gmail.com. I will update this list as more info becomes available. If you have other ideas for helping out then let us know!

I, too, would love to get involved but am fairly clueless as to how to organize. Amy, Brooklyn Flea is a great idea. Another good Brooklyn spot might be in McCarren Park, since it gets a lot of food traffic (even during the winter), and they have the farmers’ market on Saturdays.
In terms of getting the money to Haiti, Partners in Health (http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%253A%252F%252Fact.pih.org%252Fearthquake&h=c78e749e659eedfa857a040e8ea555fb&ref=nf) is a reputable organization.

Deya, the fund can go to the org of your choosing. And yes, a bake sale generally works as you’ve described! Find a place to have it, get your friends and community involved, spread the word, and voila! Whether you raise 25 dollars or 2500 dollars it will be worth it! Maybe I’ll write a post about how to do it later on.
January 14th, 2010 at 3:35 pm

I just started a thread in The Square section of the forums for a Northern Virginia / metro DC vegan bake sale for Haiti, then I saw DCVegan may be getting one together. I’ll contact DCVegan. Maybe we can join forces or maybe there will be one in DC on in the NOVA suburbs. First job: get venue(s). Checking out farmers markets and places where we’ve done vegan bake sales in the past starting tommorrow. Ideas (and volunteers) appreciated! I guess you can go to the forum thread or email me at gary@compassion4animals.org. But like I said I’m also going to contact DCvegan so we have a coordinated (and awesome) effort.

A group of us is interested in doing a sale in the akron/canton/kent, ohio area. We’ve never done this before though…can I get some tips? How much do we need - if five people make 4 dozen whatever each - is that even close to enough? What about location and getting the word out in a not so vegan community?

Christina, I posted a thing about setting up a bake sale fast yesterday.
http://theppk.com/blog/2010/01/14/how-to-put-together-a-bake-sale-fast/
I think that it might be a good time to introduce non-vegans to a vegan cupcake. Make the invitations friendly, make the treats appealing looking and you just may open hearts and minds!
Bake sales can vary in size, 5 people making 4 dozen treats each sounds like (I suck at math) you’ll make a few hundred bucks. And at the very least you’ll get some experience at bake sales, bring people together and make new friends. Yay.

Hi Isa! Vancouver PPKers have teamed up with local vegan restaurant Radha for a bake sale fundraiser for Haiti featuring live music by Be Good Tanya’s member Frazey Ford, and an art opening. We’ll probably have a 5-10 dollar cover for the music (with all the proceeds going to the Humanitarian Coalition for Haiti), and we are holding the bake sale during Radha’s dinner service on Thursday Feb 4th (6-10pm) It’s going to be AMAZING!

UPDATE for Falls Church, VA bake sale. Due to ominous-sounding snow alerts, we have pushed back the bake sale one day. It will now be Sunday Feb 7, from 2pm to 6pm. Same venue (Falls Plaza Giant supernmarket). Facebook event page is: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=257440961644. Sorry about the last-minute change. It was a tough call. But let’s make it a great bake sale!
Falls Church, VA Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti - Sunday, February 7, 2pm - 6 pm.
February 3rd, 2010 at 9:33 pm
Attention wintergreens members, Hudson Valley Compassion groupies, arm wrestlers, roller derbyists, farmers, activists, quilters, queers, country singers, chefs, hairstylists, veterinarians, cyclists, bloggers, and craft queens:
We’re putting together a fundraiser for 2 groups doing good disaster relief work* in Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake. We need your help:
1 - getting the word out (flyer attached to this mail)
2 - baking, cooking, or making small artworks for the sale
3 - working the event
4 - coming and buying stuff
In solidarity with other Vegan Bake Sales for Haiti, ours, too, is a Vegan Bake Sale. But my pickles are better than my cookies, so we’ll be deviating a bit and also catering to customers who yen for salt, salsa, or spring rolls. And there’s one more way our bake sale is a little unusual. Since it’ll be taking place during Beacon’s Second Saturday artwalk, it made sense to ask all our artist and crafty friends to donate small works, which will be made available at the sale. (Nothing priced over $20, please, and please, no animal products. The point is to help some without hurting others.)
Yes, a quilted bowl makes sense.
Yes, a CD of your music is great.
Yes, your homemade granola is superb.
Do whatever you do best! To make donations, contact wintergreenscsa@gmail.com.
The Hudson Valley “Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti: Sweets, Savories, and Still-lifes” will take place Saturday, Feb. 13th at 6 pm, Zora Dora’s Paleta Shop, 201 Main Street, Beacon, NY.
All proceeds go to relief workers, Food for Life, and animal rescue group, Sodopreca, both on the ground in Haiti.
