VeganMoFo Is Upon Us

Join us for VeganMofo - the Vegan Month Of Food. The idea is to write as much as you can for the month of October about vegan food. The blog entries can be about anything food related - your love of tongs, your top secret tofu pressing techniques, the first time your mom cooked vegan for you, vegan options in Timbuktu - you get the idea.

Last year we didn’t come up with strict guidelines for how often we wrote, but I think the idea is to shoot for every weekday, or about 20 times in the month. Don’t forget to tag your stuff “veganmofo” and you can use the VeganMoFo banner (^up there) on your mofo posts. If you’d like inspiration or would just like to whine about how hard it is, check out the MoFo forum on the PPK message boards.

As the world catches on that vegan food really is the best choice for animals (suck it, humane meat!), the planet (bite me, melting ice caps!) and people (piss off, heart disease!) let’s show them what vegan eating is all about.

One last thing - you may remember that VeganMoFo was in November last year, well, this year it’s in October because there’s more produce and stuff. Also, I’ll be in NYC this November and not really near a computer.

To be included here, just leave a comment on this blog entry with a link to your URL. I will then include you in the RSS feed, once I remember how to update it. You can also join the VeganMoFo Flicker group. Happy writing everyone! If you’re feeling at a loss for how to start this off, why don’t you make your first entry about that?

EDITED TO ADD: I’m going to be away for the rest of the week but I will update this list in time for mofo. I can’t believe there are so many mofoers this year!

  138. IsaChandra Says:

Whoa, that’s a lot of you. I’m not going to count but someone else should. To answer some questions that were asked and stuff:

Sarah - a 31 day vegan pledge, that is very cool. I think if you are writing about it a lot and thinking about what you eat, it may very well stick. I think that last year a few people made the transition during MoFo and they’ve stuck with it. Good luck and have fun with it!

Erin - yes, you can totally join if you aren’t vegan so long as you are blogging about vegan food.

Someone asked for a banner - we don’t have one, just the image at the top of the post. But if someone wants to make one, go for it! I am way too distracted to be able to concentrate on an animated gif.

  453. Christine Says:

If I eat hamburgers, hotdogs and sliced ham am I considered a vegetarian?

Don’t you love those people who call themselves vegetarian or vegan and then in their next breath say, “oh, sometimes I eat steak” (or the like). I can’t even begin to tell you how many people have said things like that to me. And I love the restaurant scene when the waiter will offer up the fish of the day in response to my request of a vegetarian dish. Is fish a vegetable? Me thinks not! But I can’t be too hard on these folks as I was about that clueless in my first footsteps towards a veggie diet.

After my tofu drama, I decided there were certain meat items I was going to eliminate out of my diet. No more steaks, roast beef, pot roasts, in other words, no more dinners that my Mom made on a regular basis. I knew I wanted to make a statement about eating meat but the truth was I really liked crappy processed meat. Everything else was not an issue. I hated most meat. Steak always tasted foul to me and the little fat pockets that managed to find it’s way into a piece of whatever flesh I put into my mouth always made me gag. But I loved bad meat. Even to this day, I admit that my mouth waters when I smell the aroma wafting off of a hotdog stand but I am far beyond tempted to eat one of those nasty little things (afterall, that’s why they made tofu pups!)

The funny thing about this time in my life is people actually saw me as vegetarian. Ain’t that a hoot? Mom thought I was going to wilt away and my friends couldn’t grasp of not liking a big bloody dripping slab of flesh with peppercorn sauce but I stood my ground. And I loved that they were calling me “strange”. I liked being the rebel in my food choices and the more they questioned me the more I felt empowered. There is definitely something about making choices like this that feed the ego to some extent (no pun intended) but I was doing this for much more than that and it felt good.

As I ponder now on how I justified this diet at the time and still thought I was doing a world of good I chalk it up to what my friend Carell used to say “Something is better than nothing”. Afterall, these were baby steps towards my ultimate goal (even though I didn’t what that was then exactly). I was working towards something and being a child growing up on meat, I suppose I was going in the right direction.
