My Life Before Pizza Plus

Broccoli Rabe, Capers and Garlic Pie
I’m not sure what I did before Pizza Plus. Wandered around the streets of Park Slope aimlessly, bumping into baby carriages, eavesdropping on home-owners’ tax conversations and the injustice of it all. But now my life has a point, and that point is Pizza Plus.
In the past I’ve been known to say things like “It melts. So what?” But Pizza Plus seems to have found the perfect melting point for Follow Your Heart Cheese. I feel like the Germans must have a phrase for this melting point because they have a phrase for everything. But it comes out of the oven drippingly hot, then cools down ever so slightly to become…well, cheese for lack of a better word.

Mushroom, Tomato and Basil Pie
Everyone who works there is really nice and Brooklyn accents are included. They also have a range of fresh, creative toppings. So far my favorite pies have been 1~ broccoli rabe, capers and garlic 2~pineapple, peppers and soy sausage 3~tomatoes, basil and mushroom (also with garlic cause that’s how I do.) And since it’s a real pizza place and not a vegan place they don’t completely rip you off. Yeah, I said it.
Call ahead to make sure they have soy cheese, just in case!
And down the block The Chocolate Girl serves vegan soft serve in chocolate dipped and sprinkled cones. Not quite chocolate-y enough for me, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Being as I am not anywhere near NYC I have to ask: Where is the loaffins recipe? I know you’re working tirelessly for our cookbook needs, but please?!

what /is/ the perfect melting point i wonder? i still LOVE (soft ricottao-ish) tofu (as cheese) though. it tops my list everytime. and my pizza (:

I feel like it would actually be Schmeltzpunktstrengerveganerk?se, since Germans like making lots of of words into one word. Germans don’t need no spaces.

You are cruel, to taunt us with such pictures of indescribable–and unreachable [for non-Brooklynites!]yumminess.
I am licking the screen.
You are so lucky. *sigh*

We have a pretty decent vegan pizza shop in the Boston area. Allston, to be exact. I don’t have any idea what they use, but the ‘cheese’ melts perfectly and the ‘chicken parm’ subs bring me way back to my non-vegan days. I must find their secret recipe! In any event, if you’re ever visiting the Boston area, check out TJ Scallywaggles.

Suzie, that is what they use. I thought I’d died and gone to heaven when I tried the pizza and thought they must be using a secret cheese recipe. Lo and behold, they have a book which lists all of their food products, and this is the cheese. You can get it at Whole Foods in Brighton and Newton, but not the Fenway (sadly). It’s about as expensive as most dairy cheeses, so I can’t have it too often. The mozzarella melts well, of course, but also works unmelted in sandwiches. Monterey jack is good that way too, but the cheddar is a little hard to take if it’s not melted.
TJ’s is great and the older guy behind the counter was really nice, but the delivery guy didn’t appreciate coming over here. Oh well- I have the cheese

I love that guy! He’s so kind. He gave my friends and me free coloring books and crossword puzzles with little animals on them. There was even a story about a boy who kept a pet chicken.
I didn’t even think to look at their list of products… I must have been too busy drooling over the pizza! haha
I’m going to have to pick some of the cheese up from Whole Foods and give it a go, myself. TJs is so yummy, but a little on the expensive side.
Thanks for the info!

I haven’t been able to get the cheese to melt in the way that a 800 degree pizza oven has. Like, grilled cheeses, for example, won’t work. But if you put the cheese in the broiler after cooking or baking it, it will melt. It just won’t be Schmeltzpunktstrengerveganerk?se.

argh- last comment eaten in cyberspace! just chiming in again to say that I have gotten this to work in my oven. However, I think I cooked it a little longer and I was using a stone, if that makes any difference. I think a finer shred and thinner slice makes a difference. Same for grilled cheese.
However, I’d love to find a good homemade recipe, because it can be sort of expensive after a while. (Sadly, the Stepaniak books just didn’t do it for me.)

suzie - i love tj’s! they used to have non-vegan stuff, but they had a vegan version of every single thing! i hope that happens at our non vegan places with vegan pizza. and then they can go all vegan like tj’s too.
October 12th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Al, I remember that! When I heard the place had vegan options, I couldn’t believe it. Then when I found out it had turned COMPLETELY vegan, I was in heaven!
Unfortunately, there are only a select few areas in and around Boston that could actually make any money being completely vegan.

Pizza Plus owner assured me that one cheeseless visit was a total fluke, and that PP will never be without FYH mozzarella in the future!

Damn… I may have to make an expedition from the wilds of NJ to this promised land you call “Brooklyn.”

I’ve had a slice from Nice Slice in Providence, but I didn’t find the cheese to be melted well. Being able to get it by the slice is, well, nice, though.
