Amazon Top 2 Cookbooks: Breaking the Circle of Trust?

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

I’ve mentioned that I’m a little obsessed with my Amazon stats. Right now Veganomicon is the #2 Vegetarian Cookbook fighting tooth and nail with Mark Bittman’s “How To Cover Vegetables In Cheese”. But hovering above both of us is a book called “Hiding Vegetables In Kids’ Food”. And on the overall cookbook list, that book is in fierce competition with Jessica Seinfeld’s book of the same name.

I think the more telling story, though, is the surprising new gastrobiography from James Frey, “A Side Of Deception: How My Mother Snuck Stuff Into My Food And Scarred Me For Life.” A touching semi-memoir about how dishonesty at the dinner table can lead to life-long fractures that may never be mended. I am definitely going to check it out.

Oh, and I think I’ve figured out a way to get your kids to eat vegetables. Stop feeding them McDonald’s and Lunchables the other 90 percent of the time. Okay, so now you don’t need those other two books, just get Veganomicon.

Halloween Round-Up Before Halloween

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Because surely there will be another round up after Halloween.

Halloween Mini-Donuts. Possibly the Lolo recipe? I’m not sure. From vanessaissleeping on Flickr.

Creepy Crawler Cupcake Tower from Vegan Noodle on Flickr. Here’s a close-up!

Festive Fall Cakes, from Bittersweet Blog. Check out her new dessert cookbook My Sweet Vegan, too!

Black and Oranges, from ijustdiedinside on the PPK forums. These are actually a tester recipe from our upcoming cookie book, bakery style black and white cookies. You may have to be from NYC to know what they are.

Best for last. These are vegan fingers from a Grossest Vegan Potluck party, there’s a whole set on Flickr from bryanbope. Check out the litter box cake…if you dare.

Vegan Bloggers Everywhere

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Katie of Don’t Eat off the Sidewalk (and the PPK forum mod with the itchy bannination finger) gets interviewed by Jewcy.

And Melisser of Urban Housewife finagles her way into the Washington Post with her vegan candy corn recipe. I also ran into her at Atlas cafe last night, she’s got great hair.

Do you have a vegan blogger sighting?

Report it to veganbloggersightings@theppk.com. Wait, don’t, that is a totally fake address.

Get Your Vegan Twinkies At Vegan Honey

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Twiiiiinkie

Last night I ran into my friend Kimberly at Pizza Plus. In fact, every time I go there I run into someone I know, and it’s getting a little embarrassing.

Anyway, Kimberly is a former Satya staffer, and when they closed their doors she started up her own baking business called Vegan Honey. Her Etsy store features childhood favorites, like Twinkies and Chocodiles. “I just make whatever I know I want to eat.” She told me yesterday, completely oblivious to the fact that I was secretly interviewing her for my blog.

Some of her other tasty offerings are Spiced Apple Turnovers, Coney Island Chocolate Dippers (chocolaty sprinkled pretzel rods), and Pecan Sticky Bombs. She even makes treats for your doggy! And to sweeten the pot, 5% of the profits go to animal advocacy causes. So go support one of the hardest working vegans in Brooklyn, as well as your sweet tooth. She ships all over the US and Canada.

Vegan On Vegan Love

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Josh says “Just 4 extra dollars will help feed me for about 2 hours.” Won’t you please support vegan business?

To be honest, we are thrilled with our Amazon stats. Veganomicon is currently the #1 vegan cookbook and #8 in cookbooks over all. There is definitely something thrilling about beating Anthony Bourdain (literally) and Mark Bittman (figuratively) and anyone else who receives endless pimping from the NY Times and The Food Network.

But we want to remind you to support vegan businesses when you buy Veganomicon. Maybe you already purchased yours, but Hannukah is coming up, isn’t it? And, okay fine, Christmas, too. Believe me, I know that sometimes you have to just do Amazon as funds allow, but if you have a few extra bucks our vegan businesses could use it.

The following stores will have Veganomicon in stock next week. Throw them a little love…and throw it hard!

Cosmos Vegan Shoppe (now taking preorders!)

Food Fight Grocery (hold off on ordering until Nov. 4th)

Herbivore Clothing Company (they should have some next week)

Giveaway #4 Results: Another Day In Paradise

Friday, October 26th, 2007

There were so many heartbreaking talent show stories, but sweetshop’s had all the elements of a compelling tragedy.

1) Interpretive Dance

2) Black Leotard/Peach Tights (also known as BLPT)

3) Moment of glory cut short thanks to Vice Principal

4) Phil Forking Collins

How many vegan lives has Phil Collins destroyed?

Plus, it made me laugh. I’m also going to give it up for Mel’s man Shane for being an outspoken budding vegan in 1987.

Thanks for all the stories, everyone! I think they were reward enough, no? No. I guess not. But there will be more contests so hold on to that humiliation for next time! Mel and Sweet, send me your addresses.

I’ll try to pick the winners for GiveAway #5 later today.

Veganomicon GiveAway#5: Turning People Away From Veganism

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

I know I haven’t announced the winners of contest #4, but I really need to handle it with the care it deserves. I don’t want to rip open any old wounds. I promise to announce it tomorrow. But bet your goji berries do I have a fun one for today.

Contest #5, if you choose to accept it, is to create the most offensive “Go Vegan!” flyer that you can. People are always talking about people being turned off from veganism by things that I don’t necessarily think should turn them off, so I thought it would be funny to really turn them off. So gear up your photoshop and get cracking.

There are some limits, though! Firstly, offensive doesn’t mean disgusting, so no pictures of tubgirl or goatse imploring veganism. Keep it semi-clean! Also, nothing racist, sexist or homophobic. That clause is just to insure that no one just duplicates a Peta pamphlet. RIMSHOT!

So be offensive, turn us off, but be funny. Upload your flyer to flicker or whatever so that we can see it. Go vegan or go fuck yourself!

Peruvian Purple Potato Soup

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Why is it Peruvian? Maybe because purple potatoes are from Peru or maybe because I love alliteration. Either way, this soup made me feel like I was somewhere exotic, or at least anywhere besides my torn up corduroy couch in front of the TV. This is the kind of soup you can only really make after visiting a farmers market because although it’s super simple, regular supermarkets just don’t carry the ingredients. But I suggested some substitutes if you would like to try it.

I get big eyes at the Union Square Farmers market and tend to lug home more than I can use in a week, so because they stay fresh, tubers and squash are good (albeit heavy) choices for me. Last week I bought these gorgeous “purple beauty” potatoes. When I sliced them open I expected the color to be a little faded, but they were a vibrant Prince purple. The kind of purple you want to paint your room on a Saturday evening when you’re 15 and have no Cure concert to go to.

I also came into some Delfino cilantro. It’s a little different than the common parsley-looking cilantro, it looks sort of like dill, with thin stubby leaves. The taste was a bit different, too - more lemon-y and stronger. Pick some up if you can find it, but use regular cilantro for this recipe if you can’t.

The last hard to find ingredient was Czech black chili peppers. They were mild and fruity and absolutely gorgeous, but I think that jalapenos would be a fine substitute.

After boiling the potatoes the color did fade just a tad, so I cheated and grated in some beet. Unless you’re a food photographer that probably isn’t exactly necessary.

Peruvian Purple Potato Soup

Serves 6

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped

6 czech black peppers, seeded and thinly sliced

2 bay leaves

3 cloves garlic, minced

4 cups water

2 pounds purple potatoes, peeled and cut into 3/4 inch chunks

1/2 teaspoon salt (plus more to taste)

1/4 cup Delfino cilantro, chopped

Juice 1/2 a lime, or to taste

Optional: a little grated beet for color

Preheat soup pot over medium heat. Saute the onions, chilies and bay leaves for about 7 minutes, until softened. Add garlic and saute 3 minute more.

Add potatoes, water and salt. Cover and bring the heat up to boil. Once boiling, lower heat a bit to a slow simmer and cook until potatoes are tender - usually 15 to 18 minutes.

Use an immersion blender to puree half the soup, or transfer half of the soup to a blender or food processor and puree. Be sure to let the steam escape in between pulses so that the steam doesn’t build up and explode all over you. But get an immersion blender, it is so worth it. Return pureed soup to pot and mix.

Add cilantro and lime and taste for salt. Grate a little bit of beet in, using a microplane grater if you’ve got one. I used maybe a tablespoon, maybe a little less. Let sit for at least 5 minutes for the flavors to blend. Serve!

Veganomicon GiveAway#4: Talent Show

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Edited to Add: This contest is over! Thanks to everyone who participated!

Because junior high school was awful and therapy is expensive, the winner of this contest is actually a loser. Tell us about a talent show that you lost. I’ll pick a few losers to send books to.

What is it about a talent show that makes us put our hair in a side ponytail?

Veganomicon GiveAway #3: Phrenology

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

For this give away, you’ll need to get a DNA sample from Terry. Or just somehow guess her nationality. Terry’s parents are from two separate countries, can you name them? It’s kind of tough, so I’ll give hints throughout the contest.

Terry in all her glory. Is she even from Earth?

EDIT: The contest is over. Please stop guessing. Come by for a new contest tomorrow!
