Magnolia Bakery - Sprinkles or Mouse Droppings?

I know I shouldn’t write something so gross on a cupcake blog, but Magnolia Bakery bothers me. First of all, they use eggs and butter. It’s as if they don’t even realize that the vegan revolution is upon us. Second of all, I had a cupcake of theirs in my pregan days and it was dry. Not quite biscuit dry, but definitely dry. Third, it just annoys me in the way that designer jeans annoy me. Wait, do designer jeans still exist or is that strictly 80s? Whatever.

But they’ve been shut down by the health department, and although the owner is trying to focus the attention on the missing sink, read a little further and see that some mice are missing their droppings.

Sometimes I think people stand in line for them just to be standing in a line. This isn’t communist Russia. There are cupcakes everywhere, go celebrate your freedom. Preferably at Babycakes or ’snice.

Dry cupcakes? Non-vegan cupcakes? Say it ain’t so! I’ve fed so many cupcakes to non-vegans and they’ve only ever said “this is so good.” There’s no excuse! They could covertly veganize and nobody would notice anything except great tasting baked goods.

I want to covertly veganize like the old Taster’s Choice (instant coffee) commercials.

“We’ve come to this five star restaurant tonight and secretly replaced all the food with vegan food. Let’s film people’s reactions…”

Though I have to have some sympathy for their mouse droppings by the trash. It’s hard to avoid in NYC, but they should have swept them up. Too many places there put out poison or use glue traps. If something is going to accidentally wind up in my food I’d prefer mouse poo to poison that makes you bleed to death slowly, internally. Still neither is the better option, and if they took out the trash enough and swept enough the mice would probably just move on to a sloppier eatery.

Yes, I think designer jeans do exist. I think people pay $500 for jeans worn out and torn up by someone else. Or you can go to Salvation Army and get some for $10 that are already torn up by someone else…

Oh, totally. Mouse droppings is not their fault. I’m just being mean because I’m full of hate today!

  3. Says:

yuck. i hate magnolia bakery too. their cupcakes ARE dry. :(

Yes, in my pre-vegan days, I too partook of Magnolia’s offerings because I wanted to stand in line & see what all the hype was about. What was it about- nothing but hype & maybe their secret ingredient of mice droppings…definitely not vegan!

The cuppers at Babycakes & S’Nice are worlds better & I also love the ones at Sacred Chow. And of course, yours from VCTOTW are a universe better than cruel Magnolia cupcakes…

A year and a half ago, I came up from Boston to Chelsea for my pregnant sister’s baby shower. The restaurant we were at supplied the food, but they let us bring in some cupcakes from a chi-chi bakery- may even have been Magnolia’s. The way everyone pre-raved about the cupcakes, I was expecting to faint from pleasure. Um, no. The cupcakes were not only really dry (which made me think maybe it was Magnolia’s) but also really sweet. The only one that was semi-decent was the red velvet, but when I say red, I mean RED.

About six months ago, my other sister insisted that we have cupcakes for my daughter’s bat mitzvah. Good choice, right? Sadly, she insisted on using a frosting recipe from- you guessed it!- Magnolia’s. Suffice to say, the cupcakes were good, the frosting… not so much.

Thank you for your book, Isa- you have renewed my faith in cupcakes. My non-baking husband made golden cupcakes with chocolate buttercream and they were soooo good. I’m trying to stop myself from running out to get the ingredients for the green tea and/or pistachio rosewater cupcakes right now because I’m trying to cut down on the sweets, but I’m not sure I’ll make it through the day without a trip to Whole Foods.

    Thanks,
    Deb

Oh nooooo… where will trendy Hollywood celebrities (or US-magazine readers, whichever) get their awesome cupcakes now?

  7. Says:

Maybe I’m missing something but I just saw a violation of no sink in the area where they prepare the cupcakes. But where is the violation of mouse droppings?

  8. Says:

This question begs asking… How does one operate a bakery with no sink? Do they mean an EXTRA sink?

A friend of mine just recently went to Magnolia and said her cupcake was so-so. Tasted like a stick of butter. Maybe it’s her being preggers or maybe it just didn’t taste so good? Not sure.

Billy’s is near me, so maybe I’ll just start going there for my non-vegan cupcakes instead? Babycakes is too far across town from my office. Anyone know of vegan treats on the far west side of town in the Chelsea area?

    Allison:
“The bakery said it was also cited for a missing door handle, a missing light cover, and several mouse droppings and fruit flies by its garbage area.”

    j.cro:
It was an extra sink. Also, s’nice might not be too far, it’s off 14th st on 8th ave.

  10. Says:

Ohhhh, that’s right!! S’nice! I forgot about that place!
Sacred Chow used to be about a 10 minute walk from my office but it moved to Sullivan St. Bummer!
    Thanks for that!!!

I must agree with Deb, Magnolia’s cupcakes are WAY too sweet. I tried to eat a whole one and almost got sick… later my in-the-know friend said she can usually just eat half of a Magnolia cupcake, and saves the rest for later. Oh well…

  12. Says:

me eat cup cake no good sorry me japenese but it very sweet it make me sick

“First of all, they use eggs and butter.”

OH THE HORROR!! Eggs and butter in baking, that’s absurd!!

“It’s as if they don’t even realize that the vegan revolution is upon us.”

Maybe in your little world, but you’re obviously out of touch with the real world.

“Third, it just annoys me in the way that designer jeans annoy me. Wait, do designer jeans still exist or is that strictly 80s? Whatever.”

Attempt at being funny. Epic fail.

“Sometimes I think people stand in line for them just to be standing in a line. This isn’t communist Russia.”

Another attempt at being funny. Yet another epic fail.

    You people need lives :)
