The rumors are true. I think it's tofutti cheese, but whatever, beggers can't be choosers and it was quite yummy.

A vote for Dread is a vote for veganism

Monday, July 24th, 2006

You know when someone is like “vote for me on the internet!” for something and you're all “no way, who the hell are you?”

Well, instead, just this once can you be all “yes, definitely!”? My friend Eppy, the inventor of veganism and metal, is up for an Ennie award which I guess is pretty important to nerds. And his game is really fun, it's a role playing game that uses Jenga instead of dice.

In the game I was in the players played people that were hunting Ted Nugent for sport. So a vote for Dread is a vote for veganism. Also, you can check out the game and get a copy, even if you don't play RPGs it's really fun.

To vote, go here and pick Dread in the categories best rules and best game. You don't have to vote for everything else. It's fun and easy! Well, it's easy anyway.

And here are Jim and Evelyn from veganfriendly.com playing Dread.

Dread the gameDread, the funnest game in the world!

Vegan Sammiches

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

I've started a sammich makin' business, if you know people in the Park Slope area let them know that they can have vegan sammiches every day of the week. Here's the generic email I sent out:

Hi guys! Here is the menu for next week. Try to place orders for the whole week* by Friday. All sammiches come with a little side salad (potato salad, coleslaw, bean salad - whatever I feel like making) and are a measly $8. For offices put as many orders as you can in one email. Email your order to vegansammiches@gmail.com. Remember to include your address and phone number. Sammiches will be delivered between noon and 2 pm, but I will call you at around 11 to give you a more specific time. Feel free to forward the menu to whomever you think might be interested (so long as they are in the Park Slope area, because it's just me and a shopping cart!)

Happy Sammiches!

Veganism in an uder veldt

Monday, July 10th, 2006

When I'd ask my grandmother for something she couldn't or wouldn't give me she'd say “In an uder veldt”. I'm sure I'm spelling it wrong. It's yiddish for “in another world” and I presume she meant a better, magical world where I could stay up as late as I wanted and eat ice cream.

That's what this made me think of - someone posting a message to help unveganize the Fauxstess Cupcakes because they just can't find a non-vegan version. Imagine a day when people are like “I can't find meat hotdogs!”. That's why I don't mind meat analogs all that much. I mean, from a culinary perspective I find them boring but from a sociological stand point they are awesome. Words have the meaning we give them, there was a point in time where “meat” simply meant “food”. So when people complain about “real” burgers vs. “fake” burgers they should really take it up with a linguist, not a vegan. Maybe someday real burgers will mean soy.

Anyways, it led me to google fauxstess cupcakes and I found lots of cool blogs that document their fauxstess.

Rainbow cookies

Friday, July 7th, 2006

My friend Erica requested (as in demanded) that I make a vegan rainbow cookie and so I set out on what I thought would be a simple little day of baking. These innocent looking cookies put me through hell. The dough was near impossible to work with so after lining three pans with it and then realizing that my pans were way too big for the amount of dough I had, I had to scrape sticky dough off of parchment paper and reuse my brownie pan 3 times. And of course my natural green food coloring didn't work, but I tried even though I knew it wouldn't. So these are yellow.

For those unfamiliar with the beauty that is the rainblow cookie, it's layers of cakey marzipan, spead with a little raspberry jam and coated in chocolate. It should be the colors of the Italian flag but these - I'm not sure what flag this could be. You can get them at most Italian bakeries in Brooklyn, and actually many Jewish bakeries have them as well these days. I guess they stopped trying to fight it and became one culture. They're also called “tri-color” cookies, but I grew up calling them rainbow so that's what I call them. I'd love to know a little about their history or if they are actually even made in Italy, I get the feeling they originated in Brooklyn, though.

Anyway - I present you with the vegan rainbow cookie!
