Tournament of chumpians

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

Join the Trivia with a Vengeance trivia tournament. But if one more person beats my score I will jump up and down in front of your oven while you are baking a cake (not out of happiness but to sink your cake).

See mom? I told you I would amount to something - now can you finally love me?

Doctors without Bloggers

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006

For all you people with recipes burning holes in your aprons, the blog What do I Know? is putting together a cookbook to benefit Doctors Without Borders. I think it's vegan because the author of the blog is vegan so head on over and send her a little sumpin sumpin.

As if the Fauxstess Cupcakes could get any cuter

Monday, January 23rd, 2006

Here's a wonderful photo essay from a PPK board member as he navigates his way through the Fauxstess Cupcake recipe, and here is his adorable daughter enjoying the fruits of his labor. I wish I had a dad like that, I think my dad had me taste beer when I was her age.

Grrr, mean angry vegan child devours vegan cupcake

For vegans with more vegan to love

Friday, January 20th, 2006

In 1996 I dated this guy who said “You're vegan? But you're so thick.” as he playfully slapped my derriere. I think I broke up with him the next day. I know that “thick” is supposed to be a compliment in hip hop vernacular but he was still a little too sexist for me so it was over anyway. My point is that the vegan diet is not a cure all for that extra junk in the trunk. White flour, sugar, fried foods - they're all still vegan. And don't get me started on the cupcakes. So I was happy to find Fat Free Vegan, a food blog with pretty pictures and low fat recipes. Go check it out and follow this seasoned vegan's adventures as she serves up all sorts of yumminess, from muffins to Mexican pumpkin soup to southern cuisine. And oh yeah, a couple of really nice looking salads.

Mexican Pumpkin Soup

Another reason to hate* California

As if all that sunshine isn't bad enough, there is now going to be a completely vegan boutique in Costa Mesa! (As if I know where Costa Mesa is.) It's called “Humanitaire” and there is no website yet but the lease has been signed and for now you can view the MySpace profile.

“No need to check labels in this boutique - everything sold at Humanitaire is vegan, sweatshop-free, and not tested on animals. Our philosophy is that style and ethics are not mutually exclusive. We plan to carry shoes, bags, wallets, faux fur accessories, makeup, t-shirts, jewelry, and whatever else we can think of between now and opening day (date TBA).” - Humanitaire

And since I told you about it, pick me up something pretty, ok? This ass don't decorate itself.

*When East Coasters say hate we mean love. We are a complicated people.

At least somebody listens to me

Jill Murray is awesome. She made a big pot o’ white beans and blogged the whole thing. On the menu: Bean & Provencal Stew, Fettucine Alfonso (with homemade pasta – go see how easy it is!), White Bean Croquettes on a Bed of Corn and Spinach in Portabello Wine Sauce (learn why putting something on a bed of something makes you 40% cooler) and some other stuff. She must be a Virgo or something (not that I believe in that) because she kept track of what the whole venture cost:

Cumulative total servings for the whole pot ‘o beans: 15

Average cost per serving: $0.65

So again I implore you to go make a big pot o’ beans! That's the last time I say it. You can bring a horse to water but you can't make him drink. And vegans shouldn't be making horses do anything, anyway.

A handy little tool from the "the internet"

Monday, January 16th, 2006

I found this recipe search site, FoodieView, because I noticed quite a few hits to my site from it. It's pretty useful, it searches all the recipe sites at once and it's a clean no-frills design with the added benefit of no popups or annoying flash things. It also has a blog but who cares? I'm surprised that google isn't all over something like that, but they probably own that site for all I know. I found this google recipe search by some guys from Stanford but it's basically the equivalent of searching for “crumbcake” and the word “recipe”. You don't need a Stanford education to figure that out.

Cruelty free cupcakes

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

Waking up at 8 am on a Sunday is painful. Not just any Sunday, the
Sunday it decided to turn from unseasonably warm into eyelashes
freezing cold. But my reasons for doing so are noble and true. I am
baking cupcakes for my nephew's first birthday! The thing is, he can't
eat them because he's only one. So I am going to make some sort of
crispy rice, brown rice syrup concoction for him and chocolate cupcakes
for the rest. What a way to break the news to him that life isn't
always cupcakes and comfy sweatshirts and water taxis across the East
River. Some times it's brown rice balls and 18 layers and wet frozen
feet waiting for the Q train.

And speaking of cupcakes, this is as good a time as any to announce our
next book: Vegan Cupcake! I say “our” because Terry is writing it with
me. And I say “Vegan Cupcake” because I haven't come up with a title
for it yet but I can assure you that it will 100% pure cupcake. It's
not going to be a huge book - about 30 cupcake recipes all with
photography (which I am so happy about!) and an extensive section on
decorating and crafting the little darlings. It's going to be released
in Fall '06 which incidently will be around the same time that we put
all other cupcake franchizes out of business.
